FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 21 TCU Horned Frogs dropped the first game of a doubleheader, 6-4, to Wright State. The Raiders broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning and hung on for the win. Andrew Walker hit his first home run of the season. Chad Huffman and Keith Conlon each recorded two hits in the contest.
After the Raiders had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Andrew Walker tied the game one swing of the bat as he drilled the Ross Vagedes pitch over the center field fence for his first home run of the season.
Keith Conlon gave the Frogs the lead in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out single. Steven Trout extended his hit streak to eight games with a lead-off base hit to right field. A Bryan Kervin sacrifice moved Trout to third. After a groundout moved Trout to third, Conlon singled to drive him in with the go-ahead run.
Wright State regained the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring three times on two hits and an error. A bases loaded wild pitch allowed the tying run to cross the plate. An error proved costly as two runs came around to score, giving the Raiders a 4-2 lead.
The Frogs tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a two-out rally. Kervin got things going with a double and scored on a base hit by Chad Huffman. A Conlon single advanced Huffman to third, ending Vagedes day. The second pitch from reliever Jason Bennion bounced to the backstop allowing Huffman to score the tying run.
The seesaw battle continued as the Raiders broke the tie in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally of their own. Brian Shoup's infield single gave Wright State the 5-4 lead.
The Frogs looked to have tied the game in the bottom of the eighth but a strong defensive play by the Raiders ended the threat. Matt McGuirk led off the inning with a base hit and advanced to second on a sacrifice off the bat of Walker. Matt Carpenter singled through the right side, but McGuirk was thrown out at the plate by the right fielder Amin Abusaleh.
The Frogs tried to mount a rally in the ninth inning. The first two batters reached base and moved up 90 feet on a Trout sacrifice, but Wright State pitcher Joe Smith buckled down and got the final two outs to end the game.
Sam Demel (0-2) went 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Shawn Ferguson pitched the final 3.1 innings and allowed a run on three hits and struck out four.
The Frogs are now 4-4 on the season.
