ABOUT THE GAME
The Horned Frogs look to even their series with Air Force after a 75-49 defeat on Jan. 14 in Colorado Springs. The two teams will meet for the second time this season and fourth all-time.
Wednesday's contest marks the second time Air Force will play in Fort Worth. In the teams' first-ever meeting, TCU defeated the Falcons 114-87 on Jan. 21, 1999.
Air Force will be the first of three remaining home games of the regular season for TCU. The Frogs will play host to BYU later this month and Utah on March 1 before concluding their 2005-06 regular season on the road at Utah on Mar. 4.
TCU will have to step up significantly against the Falcons as they are ranked No. 1 in the nation this week in scoring defense. Air Force is allowing just 54.3 points per game.
Former Texas high school rivals Chudi Chinweze (TCU) and Antoine Hood (Air Force) will meet on the hardwood for the second time this season. Chinweze played at Hightower High School in Houston, while Hood attended Clements High School in Sugar Land. Last month, the two faced each other for the first time since high school with Chinweze finishing with six points while Hood had 13.
The Falcons are no strange bird for one assistant on TCU coach Neil Dougherty's coaching staff. First-year assistant coach Jeff Luster, who was promoted in April 2004 after serving as the Frogs' director of basketball operations the last three years, spent one season (1999-2000) at Air Force as a third assistant under former Falcon head coach Reggie Minton.
At the helm of the Air Force program is first-year head coach Jeff Bzdelik, who spent the last three seasons as the Denver Nuggets' head coach. Bzdelik is one of eight active Division I head coaches who are former NBA head coaches.
ROUND ONE: AGAINST THE FALCONS
at Air Force 75, TCU 49
Jan. 14, 2006
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) -- Jacob Burtschi had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Air Force to a 75-49 win over visiting TCU on Saturday afternoon.
The win helped the Falcons rebound from a 55-50 loss at Wyoming three days earlier, a loss that ended their 12-game winning streak.
Burtschi scored in double figures for the eighth straight game and was one of five Falcons to finish with at least 10 points. Sophomore guard Tim Anderson had a team-high 15 points for Air Force.
The Falcons shot 58 percent from the field, including a season-best 54.5 percent from 3-point range. Air Force hit 21-of-26 free throws and out-rebounded the Horned Frogs, 28-20.
Antoine Hood had 13 points for the Falcons, and Dan Nwaelele and Matt McCraw chipped in 11 apiece as Air Force improved to 11-0 at Clune Arena.
Air Force's top-ranked scoring defense held TCU to 33 percent shooting from the field and 29 percent from 3-point range. The Falcons have now held eight of their first 17 opponents to less than 50 points.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair for the first 14 minutes, with the lead changing hands five times. TCU took a 21-20 lead with 6:18 remaining, but the Falcons closed the half with a 14-2 run to take a 34-23 lead into the locker room. McCray's two 3-pointers sparked the run that put Air Force ahead for good.
TCU, which had lost five games by six points or less, was led by Judson Stubbs' nine points.
LAST TIME OUT: New Mexico 53, at TCU 42 (Feb. 11, 2006)
TCU had at least two players score in double digits for the 20th time this season with Judson Stubbs totaling 14 points, while Nile Murry added 13.
Judson Stubbs posted his fourth career double-double as he led the Horned Frogs with 14 points and 10 boards. It also marked the 13th time Stubbs paced the team in rebounds.
Senior Nile Murry scored in double figures for the 21st time this year as he tallied 13 points on the night. He also pulled down seven rebounds.
For the third straight game and 15th time in 2005-06, the Horned Frogs shot a minimum of 60 percent from the free-throw line. TCU shot 64.7 percent at the stripe against the Lobos.
The Frogs held New Mexico to its second-lowest point total of the year as the Lobos totaled 53 points.
TCU has held six of its opponents to under 60 points in 2005-06.
TCU outrebounded the Lobos 43-35, making it the ninth time the Frogs had more grabs than their opponents this season. TCU was 20-4 on the offensive end.
