LEXINGTON, Va. (February 12, 2006) - Led by a career high from junior Nikki LeCompte, the TCU women's rifle team defeated the Virginia Military Institute in the 60-shot air rifle event Sunday to claim victory at the NRA Sectionals & NCAA Qualifier at Kilbourne Hall in Lexington, Va. The Frogs set a new school record for aggregate score as they defeated the Keydets, 4573 to 4428, in the team's final competition of the 2005-06 season.
LeCompte fired a personal best score for the second day in a row, shooting a 581 in air rifle to lead TCU to victory. She also had a career-high 575 in smallbore on Saturday. LeCompte's air rifle mark places her in a tie for the fourth best score in school history. Freshman Tanya Gorin finished one point behind LeCompte with a total of 580. Senior Celeste Green and junior Emily Conway had totals of 563 and 559 respectively. Freshman Aida Garcia competed individually and shot a 553.
"Nikki trained very hard for this competition and it was good to see her shoot as well as she did," head coach Karen Monez said.
The combined scores of LeCompte, Gorin, Green and Conway gave the Frogs an air rifle total of 2283, the fourth highest in school history. Combined with Saturday's record-setting smallbore score of 2290, the team finished with a school record aggregate score of 4573. The total edges the old record of 4572, set at the UTEP Triangular on January 20, 2006.
The victory marks the conclusion of the most successful season in TCU history. Over the course of the 2005-06 season, the Frogs were able to effectively rewrite the school record book, posting the top-five scores in school history for both individual and team 60-shot smallbore and 60-shot air rifle as well as aggregate team score.
"I was thrilled with the way we consistently improved throughout the season and were able to end the year so strong," she said. "Now our goal is to continue to develop so that we can compete at an even higher level next year."
Although the team's season is over, a number of shooters will await word as to whether or not their scores this weekend will place them in the individual portion of the NCAA Championships, scheduled for March 11-12 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
