Langford turnaround gives Horned Frogs a last-second victory

FORT WORTH, Texas - Kevin Langford swished a 15-foot turnaround jumper from the left baseline with 0.4 seconds remaining to give the TCU Horned Frogs (6-3) a 53-51 victory over the Tulane Green Wave (5-4) Saturday afternoon at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The 53 points were the fewest in a TCU win since the Frogs defeated Iowa State, 53-52, on Nov. 29, 1991.
It was a typical game between the former conference rivals, as the eight contests over the last five years have been decided by just 6.5 points per game.
TCU led for the bulk of the contest and built an 11-point lead, 35-24, with 16:22 to play, but the Green Wave went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to cut the Frogs' advantage to one. A dunk by David Gomez, who led all scorers with 31 points, gave Tulane a 45-44 lead, their first since the 11:50 mark of the first half.
Tulane moved on top by three, 49-46, with just under four minutes left, but the Frog defense allowed just one more bucket the rest of the way.
After trailing for the next four-plus minutes, TCU freshman Keion Mitchem drained a key 3-pointer with 49 seconds remaining to give the team a 51-49 lead. After a Tulane basket, TCU held for one shot and Neil P. Dougherty found Langford, who turned and fired over Gomez for the winning bucket.
TCU improved to 5-1 at home this year and won its fourth game by 10 points or less. Last year, the Horned Frogs went just 3-13 in those contests.
Brent Hackett paced the Frogs with 15 points, while Mitchem tallied a career-high 13. Langford finished with eight points and eight rebounds, while Alvardo Parker had seven points, eight boards and five blocked shots.
TCU has an eight-day break for finals week before hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 18.
