The TCU Lady Frogs dropped a season opener for the first time in the Jeff Mittie era Friday evening. It was also the first time a Mittie-led squad played in the regular season against a top-ranked team. The last time TCU battled a No. 1 opponent was during the 2002 NCAA Tournament versus Duke (TCU lost 76-66). Under the eighth-year coach's direction, the Lady Frogs are 7-1 in openers.
After starting 37 straight games for TCU, junior guard Adrianne Ross' streak came to an end against Maryland. Ross, an All-American candidate and preseason All-MWC selection, came off the bench and scored a team-high 15 points.
Lorie Butler-Rayford turned in an all-around respectable performance. The junior had eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and one steal in a team-high 25 minutes of playing time.
After shooting a low 30.3 percent in the first half, TCU picked up the pace in the second half and shot a blistering 46.7 percent from the field.
Three newcomers made their official debut as a TCU Horned Frog. Freshman Shayla Moore, a product of Denison High School in Denison, Texas, earned a start while freshman Danielle Nunn (Arlington Bowie/Arlington, Texas) came off the bench and scored eight points. Junior college transfer Helen Roden was 3-for-5 from the field for eight points.
TCU went on a 22-6 run late in the second half and pulled within 18 points after Lorie Butler-Rayford sunk two free throws at the 2:48 mark.
Early in the second half, Helen Roden's nose was blooded and busted on the court, which required her to leave the game. After getting checked out by team athletic trainers, she returned to the bench late in the game.
TCU will have about 14 hours to prepare for No. 25 George Washington. The Lady Frogs will face GWU at 1:00 p.m. (CT) Saturday afternoon. In the first round of action Friday night, the Colonials came-from-behind to defeat Arizona, 69-65.
Saturday will be the first meeting ever between TCU and George Washington.
