TCU announces September award recipients

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Athletics Department announced its monthly student-athlete awards for the month of September on Monday.
The four monthly categories are Male and Female Athlete of the Month and Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
On the men's side, Marvin White was named Male Athlete of the Month, while Chris Manfredini was tabbed as Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
On the women's side, Lizzy Karoly and Catherine Matranga were named Co-Female Athletes of the Month and Anna Vaughn was selected as the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
White, a senior safety from Port Barre, La., was twice named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week in September. White also topped the Frogs in tackles with 32, a mark that ranked fifth in the MWC.
White averaged a team-best 8.0 tackles per game, which was well ahead of last year's team-leading pace of 5.9 (Jason Phillips).
In the season-opening 17-7 victory at Baylor, White posted a career-best 14 tackles, nearly three times the amount of the next-closest Frogs (three players had five stops).
Against Texas Tech, White broke up three passes while tying for team-high honors with eight stops in TCU's 12-3 win.
White also recorded an interception in the 46-13 decision over UC Davis and tied for a team-best tackle total with nine stops (seven solo) versus BYU.
Manfredini, a junior placekicker from Colleyville, Texas, carries a 3.5 grade-point average while majoring in supply and value chain management.
For the month, Manfredini went 7-for-8 on field goals, including a 4-of-4 effort in a 12-3 win over Texas Tech to account for all of TCU's scoring in the game.
His efforts against Texas Tech earned him Lou Groza Award Star of the Week and Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.
In all four September games, he made at least one field goal, and had a career-long 47-yard field goal in the 46-13 victory over UC Davis.
Karoly, a freshman forward from Escondido, Calif., led the Mountain West Conference in goals, points, shots and shots per game for the month. On two occasions Karoly scored two goals in a game - Sept. 3 against ORU and Sept. 23 against UTSA. On Sept. 15, Karoly had a league-high 10 shots in a 2-1 win over Sam Houston State.
For her efforts, Karoly was named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 25 for her two goals against UTSA and 11 shots for the week, including nine against the Roadrunners.
Karoly has started every game this season at forward.
Matranga, a senior golfer from Fort Worth, Texas, won the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Inv., and tied for second at the Jeannine McHaney Intercollegiate.
After beginning the final round in 11th place, five strokes off the pace, Matranga shot a 3-under-par 70 to take medalist honors at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. For the tournament, Matranga carded a 71-73-70-214 (-5). With the win, she became the first TCU women's golfer since Brooke Tull in 2004 to capture an individual championship.
Matranga followed her first-place finish with a tie for second at the Jeannine McHaney Intercollegiate. She carded a final round 4-under 68 to finish just four shots off the pace. For the tournament, she shot a 70-73-68¬-211 (-5).
Matranga was instrumental in a pair of top-five finishes for TCU. At the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, TCU placed fourth out of 17 teams. The Horned Frogs tied for second out of 16 teams at the Jeannine McHaney Intercollegiate.
Matranga finished the month with a stroke average of 70.8 in six rounds.
Vaughn, a senior middle blocker from Grapevine, Texas, owns a 4.0 GPA as a double major in Spanish and political science.
Vaughn finished the month as the statistical leader in kills per game with an average of 3.84. Vaughn ranked third in the Mountain West with a .355 hitting percentage.
She also led the team with 23 aces and 55 blocks in helping the Frogs get off to a 10-3 start in September - the best in school history.
