Oct. 16, 2006
Rundown:
Coach Jeff Mittie kept the Lady Frogs on the floor for nearly three hours Monday and the emphasis was on good decision-making and mental toughness. The ladies' endurance and skills were tested early as the Frog Squad made their first appearance of the season.
The Frog Squad is an all-male group that serves as a practice squad for the TCU women's basketball program from September until possibly late March. Although they will never see actual playing time, they serve as an important competent to the team.
Mittie and staff use them in various activities from drill work to all-out scrimmaging. The top women's basketball programs in the nation make use of these squads to simulate opponents and familiarize teams to bigger, more aggressive players.
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down:
After a rough start, Coach Mittie was pleased with the effort and intensity that was displayed by the Frogs at the end of practice. "We didn't start today off at a level I expect," said Mittie. "I thought we were lazy and failed to pay attention to details. I can see some people suffering from information overload at times. Those things are expected, but what separates a good team from a bad team is how they react to those challenges."
Although Coach sang the team's praises for their performance in the later part of practice, he once again reiterated his expectations for the upperclassmen.
"Some of these players have been a part of this system for four or five years, yet they're not acting like it," he said. "At this point in their careers they should know what I expect. It's critical that the veterans start playing at a higher level."
