
TCU student-athletes shine in classroom

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Nearly one-half of TCU's student-athletes posted a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher in the spring 2005 semester with 84 surpassing the 3.5 mark.A total of 200 student-athletes, representing 47 percent of TCU's 19-sport athletics program, recorded a 3.0 GPA. Thirty-five percent (146 student-athletes) were at 3.2 or higher with 20 percent reaching 3.5.
TCU student-athletes posted a combined 2.83 grade-point average in the spring 2005 semester, improving from a 2.76 mark in fall 2004.
Ronald Hobbs of the Frog men's basketball team was a recipient of the NCAA Degree Completion Award, while Tiffany Strawn (women's swimming) was a 2005-06 Conference USA Postgraduate Scholarship winner.
The TCU women's tennis program was named a 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team, while five of its players were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. Two members of the men's tennis team also received 2005 ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.
The College Swimming Coaches Association selected TCU as an Academic All-American team for 2005, the 24th consecutive semester the women have garnered the award.
The National Golf Coaches Association tabbed two TCU women's golfers as 2004-05 Division I All-American Scholars.
Of TCU's 73 recipients in the 2004-05 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, 13 are student-athletes. Seventy student-athletes were named as 2005 United States Achievement Academy Collegiate All-American Scholars.
