ARDMORE, Pa. - Three of the TCU golf program's five players at the 105th U.S. Amateur Championship placed among the top half of the 312 participants, but none were able to advance into the 64-person match play portion of the prestigious event. The five TCU competitors, which included four current Frogs and one 2005 alum, were the most ever from a Horned Frog team in a single year.
Incoming freshman Jesse Speirs was the closest Frog to the cut line, as he tied for 81st. He recorded a 7-over 77 at the Merion Golf Club to complete the tournament with a two-day total of 148 (+8). The Bangor, Maine, native made a birdie on the 14th hole to get back to plus-3 for the day, but bogeyed each of the final four holes to finish just two shots out of a playoff for the final match play spots.
Killeen, a veteran of three previous U.S. Amateurs and round of 16 participant in 2003, finished three strokes off the cut line after a second-round 77 at Merion. The former All-American from Lubbock placed among the top 100 (T-93rd) with a two-day 149 (+9) despite making bogeys on four of his final five holes.
McLean, another member of TCU's heralded freshman class, posted a 2-over 72 on Tuesday at the Philadelphia Course. McLean, who had a 78 yesterday at Merion, made a push in his afternoon round, but needed to make a birdie over the last four holes. Instead he bogeyed three of the final four to finish tied for 114th with a 10-over total of 150.
Corpening, a Fort Worth Paschal product, bounced back from an 82 with a round of 72 (+2) on Tuesday to wind up with a 154 (+14). The sophomore moved up 77 spots from a share of 267th place into 190th position thanks to a steady round that featured a birdie and just three bogeys on the Philadelphia layout.
Sacheck, a fellow sophomore, notched an 80 at the Merion Course to finish the event with a 36-hole sum of 157 (+19). In Tuesday's round, the Indiana native was a combined plus-1 over the par-3s and par-5s, but was 9-over on the par-4 holes. Sacheck landed in a share of 231st position.
The low 64 players will now compete in a match play elimination tournament until Sunday's 36-hole championship. The match play will contested solely on Merion Golf Club's historic East Course (6,846 yards, par 34-36-70). The U.S. Amateur will have 10 hours of live national coverage on The Golf Channel and NBC over the last five days of the championship.
