FORT WORTH, Texas - Former TCU baseball star, Lance Broadway arrived in Houston on Wednesday to begin a whirlwind set of activities in conjunction with The Roger Clemens Award. The activities will conclude with the announcement of the winner of the second annual award on Thursday evening. All three finalists will participate in an online chat on BaseballAmerica.com at 3:00 p.m., CDT Thursday.
Broadway, Cesar Carrillo of Miami (Fla.) and Luke Hochevar of Tennessee will take part in a private reception Wednesday evening with table patrons and then participate in a tour of the Pediatric Cancer Center at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. The trip will be a return of sorts for Broadway, who was admitted to Texas Children's in critical condition as an infant with a lung disorder that required surgery.
Broadway was 15-1 with a 1.67 ERA in 19 games (16 starts) for the Horned Frogs in 2005. He was tagged for only two homers in 117 innings of work and finished the season with a stretch of only two runs allowed over his last 49 innings pitched. Broadway tossed a total of five complete games, including two in his last three outings (at No. 1 ranked Tulane on May 20 and vs. Stanford on June 4). He set school records for wins in a season (15) and strikeouts (121).
Broadway was taken with the 15th overall selection in the MLB draft by the Chicago White Sox. He is currently pitching for the Winston Salem Warthogs of the Carolina League where he is 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA in four starts.
The Roger Clemens Award was named after future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens, who began his march to stardom while leading the University of Texas to the College World Series title in 1983. Entering the 2005 major league season, Clemens has won over 330 games, fanned over 4,000 hitters and won seven Cy Young Awards, emblematic as the top pitcher in his league. The Roger Clemens Award is the only award of its kind, honoring the finest pitchers in college baseball.
The event is administered by the Greater Houston Baseball Association, an organizatio that donated $80,000 to the designated beneficiaries (The Roger Clemens Foundation, The Karl Young Summer College Baseball League and Baseball USA) from the net proceeds from the first annual dinner. The GHBA is a non-profit 501.3 (C) organization dedicated to the growth of amateur baseball in the Houston area.
