FORT WORTH, Texas - Todd Whitting, assistant baseball coach at TCU, has been promoted to associate head coach, Horned Frogs head coach Jim Schlossnagle announced today.
"Todd is very deserving of this promotion," said Schlossnagle. "Our success over the past two years can be directly tied to his recruiting efforts along with his on-field coaching."
"My family and I are very proud to be a part of the TCU community," said Whitting. "The support and commitment to Horned Frog baseball by the university and the athletic department is tremendous. I am very fortunate to work with a staff that works so hard and is committed to continuing to elevate TCU to the highest level of college baseball."
Whitting joined the TCU staff in the summer of 2003 and has been a tireless worker both on and off the field. Whitting wasted no time hitting the recruiting trail when he arrived. In 2005, Whitting's recruiting prowess brought 21 newcomers to the squad, including three players who were drafted in the first year draft earlier in the summer and four of the top 25 players in the state of Texas. Among the highly-touted recruits were TCU stars Sam Demel, Andrew Walker, Matt McGuirk, Zach Ashwood, Lance Broadway and Shawn Ferguson. His recruiting efforts were recognized by Baseball America in the fall of 2004, as the 2005 recruiting class was ranked third in the nation, behind only Texas and Arizona State.
This past fall, Whitting inked 10 players to National Letters of Intent. The class' talent was obvious when four of the 10 were drafted in the 2005 MLB Draft. Three of the athletes signed for the 2005 season were also drafted, including the program's first-ever first-round pick in Broadway.
In just two seasons at TCU, Whitting and staff have compiled an 80-46 record, setting single-season records for wins each of those years. The Frogs have won back-to-back conference tournament titles for the first time in school history and made the school's first-ever back-to-back trips to the NCAA Playoffs.
Prior to coming to TCU, Whitting served as Houston's recruiting coordinator in addition to his primary on-field duties with the team's fielding and defensive skills. During his tenure at UH, the Cougar fielders ranked among the nation's leaders in fielding percentage and/or double plays in five of eight seasons.
Whitting helped guide the 2003 Cougar squad to the NCAA Super Regional for the second consecutive year and for the third time in four years. They succumbed to eventual national champion Rice in the decisive third game of the Super Regional.
The 2000 and 2002 squads each earned a place in the Super Regionals as well, with defense playing a huge part in the Cougars' successes. In 2000, Houston finished the season as the No. 1 ranked fielding team in NCAA Division I with a .977 percentage and turned a school-record 74 double plays in just 66 games. The 2002 squad ranked 19th nationally averaging 1.07 double plays per game.
The 1999 Cougars finished seventh nationally with a .969 fielding percentage and placed 14th with 72 twin killings. The 1997 team finished the season ranked 19th in NCAA Division I with a .963 fielding percentage, while the 1996 squad was 12th in the country with 62 double plays.
He earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from the University of Houston in the fall of 1995. He and his wife, Stephanie, have two sons, Jordan (9) and Matthew (1). The family resides in Fort Worth.
