FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU women's tennis head coach Dave Borelli signed a multiyear contract extension, athletics director Eric Hyman announced Saturday. Terms of Borelli's contract were not disclosed per university policy."What we try to do at TCU is recognize excellence," Hyman said. "Coach Borelli has taken our women's tennis program to a level it has never before achieved. This long-term commitment is a response to his accomplishments and the student-athletes' accomplishments. We couldn't be more excited about our long-term relationship with coach Borelli."
The team accomplished multiple firsts in the program's history in 2005 en route to a 21-5 record. On Feb. 13, TCU knocked off its highest ranked opponent when it topped then-No. 7 Clemson, 4-3, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas. In the following week's rankings, the Horned Frogs jumped to No. 14 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Poll, a new best for TCU.
TCU ended the season ranked 19th for only its second top 20 finish. In the NCAA Tournament, the Frogs narrowly missed reaching the round of 16 for the first time in school history after Tulane scored a 4-3 victory in New Orleans. TCU upended LSU by a 4-1 count in the first round for the program's third NCAA victory in eight appearances at the event.
Individually, senior Story Tweedie-Yates reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship and the semifinals of the Doubles Championship with sophomore Ana Cetnik. No Horned Frog advanced beyond the round of 16 prior to Tweedie-Yates, and a doubles team never won a match in three previous showings. Junior Helena Besovic also competed in singles this year, giving the Frogs their most individual competitors in one year at the NCAAs. Besovic reached the second round.
Tweedie-Yates was named a singles and doubles All-American by the ITA. It was just the second time in TCU history that a Horned Frog earned the accolade in both categories in the same year. Rene Simpson was the first in 1988. Cetnik claimed All-America praise in doubles this past year as well.
"I'm very excited about (the contract extension) and consider myself to be very fortunate," Borelli said. "This is one of the top jobs in the country. I'm committed to the program, and this is where I'd like to finish my career. I'm excited to continue what we've been doing here and to keep getting better. This is a great place for me with some wonderful student-athletes."
Borelli owns a record of 49-23 (.681) since joining TCU in June 2002. His career record stands at 351-68 (.838), having coached at Southern California for 14 seasons (1974, 1976-88) prior to TCU. He won two NCAA championships (1983, 1985), three Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women titles (1977, 1979, 1980) and two United States Tennis Association trophies (1977, 1978) while coaching the Women of Troy.
