FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU senior right-handed pitcher Chad Underwood signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, announced head coach Jim Schlossnagle. Underwood is the fourth Horned Frog to sign a pro contract this summer. Lance Broadway, Kyle Dahlberg and Stuart Musslewhite have all signed contracts this summer.
Underwood spent five seasons in the Purple and White, making more appearances on the mound the past two seasons than any other Frog. As a junior, Underwood made 25 appearances, including three starts. He finished the season with a 7-3 record to go along with a 4.24 ERA. This season, Underwood made 31 appearances and finished with a 4-2 record. He struck out 105 batters in his career and recorded three saves.
"I am thrilled to be given the chance to play for the Cubs and look forward to getting a taste of the minor league life," Underwood said. "It is a bit of a whirlwind right now, but I can't wait to get up north and play."
Underwood is expected to play for the Cubs Class A Short Season team in Boise, Idaho. Musslewhite is on the roster for the Blue Field (W.Va.) Orioles, the rookie league for the Baltimore Orioles. Dahlberg will play for the Orioles Class A Short Season team, the Aberdeen Iron Birds. Broadway has been sent to the Class A Winston-Salem Warthogs. The seasons get underway this weekend.
