NORMAN, Okla. - TCU senior golf standout J.J. Killeen has been named a PING Third-Team All-American, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced today. In April, Killeen, the 2005 Conference USA Player of the Year, became the first golfer and just the third athlete in school history to compete on four league championship teams.
Killeen, who hails from Lubbock, Texas, finished the season rated 44th nationally according to the Golfweek/Sagarin individual rankings. The first-team all-league player owned a career-best 72.09 stroke average and placed among the top 20 in all but two of the Horned Frogs' events this year. He was selected to play on the United States Team at the 2005 Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship in July.
A mainstay in the Frogs' lineup, Killeen competed in 50 of the team's 51 events over the past four years. He carried a career scoring average of 73.29 and had 22 top-20 finishes, including six top-10 landings. Previously, Killeen was a second-team All-Conference USA performer in 2004 and was the 2002 C-USA Co-Freshman of the Year. He also matched the best finish ever by a TCU golfer at the U.S. Amateur, reaching the round of 16 in 2003.
"I'm really happy for J.J.," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "He's a guy who came here under the radar, redshirted as a freshman, and worked hard every day for five years. J.J. was such a key part of all of our conference championships and was a true leader and team player. I wish him all the best."
Killeen becomes the 14th All-America golfer in school history and the fifth different player honored since 2002. Montigel has coached nine All-Americans since taking over the program in 1987.
