Fort Worth, Texas - Three members of the No. 18 TCU women's tennis team were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the Southwest Region, it was announced today. Story Tweedie-Yates was named the Senior Player of the Year, junior Helena Besovic was tabbed as the Player to Watch and Head Coach Dave Borelli was the Coach of the Year.
Tweedie-Yates, a senior from Redmond, Wash., earned the honor after she compiled a 32-4 overall record this season. The Conference USA Player of the Year has defeated two players, Aibika Kalsarieva of Kentucky and Nicole Leimbach of Southern California, this season that are ranked in the top-10 in the nation. Against all ranked opponents, she has posted a 16-4 record.
Besovic was tabbed as the region's "Player to Watch". The honor goes to a player that has an outstanding season and is expected to perform at a high level for the rest of his or her career. The Sarajevo, Bosnia, native went 33-9 overall this season and was a First Team All-Conference USA selection.
Borelli was named the Southwest Regional Coach of the Year after he led the Frogs to a 20-4 record this spring. The 17th year head coach guided his team to a win over then-No. 7 Clemson on Feb. 13, which was the highest ranked opponent that a TCU squad has ever defeated. In the following week's ITA rankings, the Frogs claimed a program-high of 14th in the national ranking.
The award winners from each of the eight regions from around the country will now be voted on to determine the 2005 national awards. They will be announced on the evening of May 22 in Athens, Ga.
TCU will compete in the NCAA Championships on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against No. 44 LSU. The match will be held at the Goldring Tennis Center on the campus of Tulane University.
