LAS COLINAS, Texas - TCU junior Colby Beckstrom posted a 4-over-par 74 in the second round of the EDS Byron Nelson Classic to miss the cut at his first-ever PGA Tour event by six strokes. Beckstrom, who managed one birdie and had five bogeys in his Friday round at the TPC Course (par 70, 7,011 yards), finished with a two-round 146 (+6).
After struggling to hit the green in regulation early in his round, Beckstrom used his touch around the green to salvage a plus-2 score of 36 on the front nine. He recorded his lone birdie at the par-5 seventh hole after drilling a fairway metal within 20 feet. His eagle putt missed to the left, and he was able to tap in for birdie.
Beckstrom drove the ball well throughout the day, but was unable to get his putts to drop. He closed the round by narrowly missing a 30-foot birdie chip on the 18th green, as the ball sat just on the right lip of the cup. Among the notable players who missed the cut include: Tiger Woods (141), Retief Goosen (141), Fred Funk (142), Rich Beem (144) and Shaun Micheel (145).
The lone amateur in the 156-player field, Beckstrom became the first golfer under head coach Bill Montigel to qualify for a PGA Tour event while still playing for the Horned Frogs by registering a 6-under 65, which included a birdie at the last hole, at Monday's qualifier.
Beckstrom is a two-time first-team All-Conference USA selection and owns a career-best 71.68 scoring average this year. The native of North Muskegon, Mich., has a pair of collegiate tournament titles to his credit during his career, which includes a shared victory at the Conference USA Championships in April.
Beckstrom, along with his TCU teammates, will next compete at the NCAA Central Regional from May 19-21 in South Bend, Ind. The ninth-ranked Horned Frogs must finish in the top 10 among 27 teams in order to advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 1-4 in Owings Mills, Md.
In addition, TCU alum J.J. Henry, a former All-American and the 1998 College Co-Player of the Year, fired a second-round 69 (-1), which included a birdie on the par-3 second with a tap-in after his tee shot hit the flag stick. He is tied for 18th position with a 36-hole 136 (-4).
