Irvin to Play in WBCA All-Star Challenge Game

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Sandora Irvin from the TCU women's basketball team will head to Indianapolis Friday for the WBCA All-Star Challenge Game. The event follows the WBCA High School All-America Game, which begins at 4:30 p.m. EST Saturday, April 2, at the University of Indianapolis' Nicoson Hall.The WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) All-Star Challenge Game is an exhibition featuring 20 of the top seniors who are not participating in the Women's Final Four. The game takes place annually during the WBCA National Convention and NCAA Women's Final Four activities. In addition to the game, there is a three-point shooting competition.
The 20 WBCA All-Stars are comprised of 17 players from NCAA Division I, as well as the top seniors in Divisions II and III, and NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics).
Irvin has received several national honors this season, being named to the United States Basketball Writers Association All-America Team and the The Associated Press All-America First Team. The WBCA selected Irvin as its National Player of the Month for her December performance. Irvin is also a finalist for the Naismith Trophy and the Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award.
She was no stranger to Conference USA accolades either. Irvin picked up Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors and earned a place on the All-Conference First Team. Additionally, Irvin was picked for the All-Decade Team and named the Most Valuable Player of the C-USA Tournament after leading the Lady Frogs to the conference title.
Irvin finished the 2004-05 season averaging 19.9 points, 11.8 rebounds, 4.5 blocked shots, 2.1 assists and 2.5 steals. She currently ranks 13th in the nation in scoring, second in rebounding and third in blocked shots. Her 150 blocks fell two shy of tying the NCAA's single-season record.
Some of Irvin's numbers this season were of record-setting quality. She broke the NCAA single-game record for blocked shots with 16 versus UAB Jan. 16. The previous standard of 15 was held by Amy Lundquist from Loyola Marymount. Irvin also had the first triple-double in school history against UAB by adding 20 points and 18 rebounds.
The next record Irvin broke was the NCAA's career mark for blocked shots of 428, doing so versus Memphis Feb. 5. She needed just three going into the game and finished with eight. Her final career tally was 480 after recording six rejections in TCU's first-round loss to Oregon in the 2005 NCAA Championship.
Irvin owns 10 of TCU's 19 career records including games started (118), field goals made (686), field goals attempted (1,503), free throws made (482), free throws attempted (705), points (1,892), scoring average (14.9), rebounds (1,370), rebounding average (10.8) and blocked shots (480).
