NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- TCU's Cory Rodgers has been named a second-team All-American at kick returner by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. The Walter Camp All-America team is selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the 119 Division I-A football schools. Walter Camp, "The Father of American Football," first selected an All-America team in 1889.
UCLA's Maurice Drew was named the Walter Camp first-team All-American at kick returner.
Rodgers, named earlier this week by Sports Illustrated as a first-team All-American, leads the Mountain West Conference while ranking second nationally in kickoff return average at 31.7 yards. He narrowly trails Felix Jones of Arkansas (31.9) for the top spot.
A junior from Houston, Rodgers is one of just three players in the country to have two kickoff returns for touchdowns this season.
With 87 and 100-yard returns for scores at SMU (Sept. 10) and BYU (Sept. 24), respectively, it took Rodgers just four games to tie the MWC career record in kickoff returns for touchdowns. He's also the only player in league history to return two kickoffs for scores in the same season.
Rogers is TCU's career leader in kickoff return yards (1,708) and total return yards (2,452).
Rodgers also leads the MWC while placing 17th nationally with a 13.4 average on punt returns. His 4,633 career all-purpose yards rank 11th among active players in the country.
Rodgers' next touchdown catch will make him the TCU career leader in that category. He's currently tied with Mike Renfro (17, 1974-77) for the top spot. With two receptions for 67 yards in the regular-season finale against UNLV, Rodgers became the sixth Frog to reach 2,000 yards in a career. He now has 2,065.
The Mountain West Conference champion and 14th-ranked Horned Frogs face Iowa State in the Dec. 31 EV1.net Houston Bowl.
