FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU men's basketball team notched a convincing 87-66 victory in its first exhibition of the 2005-06 season in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Horned Frogs leaped past the University of Calgary behind the double-digit scoring performances of Nile Murry, Judson Stubbs, Brent Hackett and Neiman Owens.
In the first half, the Horned Frogs won the initial tip-off but Calgary would get on the scoreboard first with a 3-pointer from Cody Darrah. TCU showed some first game jitters but it wasn't long before the Horned Frogs returned to form. Senior Judson Stubbs gave the team its first lead of the game, 4-3, with a layup and tip-in in back-to-back possessions and the Horned Frogs never looked back.
TCU increased its lead to double-digits, thanks to several Frogs. Senior Nile Murry proved to be the spark in the half as he shot 50 percent (3-of-6) from behind the arc and finished with 13 points. The Frogs had almost double the points in the paint than the Dinos and recorded 14 second-chance points. TCU committed two less turnovers than Calgary but was able to capitalize on the Dinos' mistakes, totaling 17 points.
The Frogs shot 50 percent from the field (20-of-40) to end the half with TCU possessing a significant 18-point advantage, 46-28.
The Dinos came charging out in the second half and even came within six points after a pair of free throws by Robbie Shiota. TCU was able to hold off the Dinos after Neiman Owens drained two 3-pointers. The Frogs eventually pulled away to a double-digit lead again from that point on.
Calgary turned in better numbers from the field (46.4 percent) compared to TCU's 31.0 percent clip. The Dinos improved from behind the arc in the half, but TCU's defense shut down three of Calgary's five top scorers.
For TCU, Murry led all players with 20 points, followed by Owens with 17. Owens and Stubbs, who racked up 11 points in the win, tied for a game-high 10 rebounds and picked up a double-double each. Hackett turned in 12 points, dished out six assists and shot 50.0 percent (5-of-10) from the field.
The Horned Frog freshman trio of Dallas Hunter, Clarence Masters and Allen Taylor made their collegiate debut. Master played 15 minutes and collected five rebounds, three points and one steal.
Hunter and Taylor played nine and eight minutes, respectively, with Hunter grabbing two rebounds and Taylor taking three.
Calgary was led by its top scoring leader Chris Wright, who tallied 15 points along with Sihota. Cody Darrah pulled in 12 points while the Dinos' point guard Whit Hornsberger led all players in the game with seven assists.
TCU will return to action next Friday, Nov. 11, to finish out its exhibition slate. The Frogs will host coach Dougherty's alma mater Cameron University with tip-off at 7:05 p.m. in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
