LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Fighting hard throughout, the TCU volleyball fell in three games to the No. 21 ranked BYU Cougars on Thursday night in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Sophomore Talaya Whitfield tallied 14 digs and 10 kills for her eighth double-double of the season. The Lakewood, Calif., product posted her second double-double in as many games after notching 19 kills and 10 digs versus Air Force on Tuesday night.
The first point of the match started with a furious rally, although the Frogs dropped the point, they established an early presence in the match. Freshman Devon Kirk led the Frogs in game one with three kills and Whitfield handled the defensive duties with six digs. Despite a tough fight, the Frogs dropped game one 21-30.
Game two began with each team going point for point, after a timeout, BYU went on a 6-0 run and prompted TCU to take a timeout. Whitfield, now playing outside hitter after starting the match at libero, ended the run by blasting the ball through a double block.
BYU used an 11-3 run to take down TCU in game two and move to a 2-0 match lead. Through two games, junior Anna Vaughn led the Frogs with seven kills and Whitfield led in digs with nine.
TCU rallied and came out strong in game three to build an 11-5 lead behind two service aces from freshman Nirelle Hampton and fellow freshman Pamela Gehrke established the defensive tone. The Cougars made a rally of their own and battled back to steal the game three victory and close out the match.
Vaughn finished the match with 10 kills.
