LARAMIE, Wyo. - The TCU volleyball team fell to the Wyoming Cowgirls in their final match of the regular season on Wednesday night. Sophomore Talaya Whitfied led the team with 15 kills and 13 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. The Frogs head to the Mountain West Conference tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 22, to close out the season.
The Frogs were led in game one by junior Agi Nemeth's four service aces. TCU was held to -.050 hitting in the game while Wyoming hit .393. Whitfield flew all over the court to pick up seven digs in the game.
TCU came back and battled Wyoming in game two by tying the blocks total at 3.0. Whitfield, for the second night in a row, moved to outside-hitter after starting the match at libero and junior Calli Corley took over the specialist duties. Whitfield quickly began firing on all cylinders and made seven kills.
Despite the offensive output by the Frogs, they could not match the Cowgirls quick offense and continued to score points in the middle. Wyoming's Rachel Smith was the beneficiary of middle attacks, finishing the match with 13 kills and hitting .520.
Wyoming looked to put away TCU in game three after building a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission and were successful, defeating the Frogs 30-19 in the final game for the match victory.
Freshman Nirelle Hampton also tallied a double-double, assisting on 28 balls and blasting 11 kills. The Gainesville, Fla., product is still the lone MWC player to record a triple-double this season after totaling 41 assists, 15 digs and 11 kills on Oct. 7, versus Air Force.
Corley finished the match with 12 digs for her 10th double-digits digs performance of the season.
With the loss, the Frogs fell to 15-17 on the season and 3-13 in the Mountain West Conference.
