FORT WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Bjarnveig Birgisdottir has been named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week for her performance this past weekend. She is the first soccer player to earn the honor for the Horned Frogs in the new conference.
Birgisdottir was instrumental in all five goals scored by the Frogs in their two victories over the weekend. In Friday's contest against Sam Houston State, she score three goals and assisted on the other as the Frogs came away with a 4-0 victory. The hat trick was the first for a Horned Frog player since Sherry Dick accomplished the feat on Sept. 3, 1999 against LSU. On Sunday, Birgisdottir scored the lone goal of the match in overtime to help the Frogs to the victory over the Boise State Broncos. Her seven-point match against SHSU ranks tied for third all-time in the MWC record book for points in a game and also ties her for the sophomore record for points in a match.
The Frogs begin conference play on Thursday when they travel to Utah. The Frogs will square off against the Utes on Thursday and No. 13 BYU on Saturday.
