ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Frogs regular season came to an end with a 1-0 heartbreaking loss to the New Mexico Lobos Saturday night. The Lobos tallied a goal with just under 20 minutes to go to break a scoreless tie. The Frogs were outshot in the contest 12-7.
The Frogs had the first chance to draw blood 18 minutes into the contest. Caroline Starns made a strong run down the near sidelines and drew a foul from a Lobo defender. Moran Lavi took the free kick to the right of the goalkeeper and watched her shot drift in towards goal. Lobos goalkeeper Kristen Winters was there to knock the ball out of danger, keeping the game scoreless.
The rest of the first half was evenly matched as both teams had some strong offensive pushes. The half ended with the shots tied at three each. Katy Buchanan made two saves in the half, but both saves were relatively easy as they were point blank shots right at her. Only one of the Frogs shots made its way on goal.
The Lobos first big scoring threat came 10 minutes into the second half. The Lobos dribbled the ball deep in their offensive zone where the feed was picked up by Kellee Hafner crossed the ball perfectly to Asha Richardson, whose header drifted just over the crossbar.
The Frogs put together another strong push and had the goalkeeper beat, but couldn't connect to put the ball in the back of the net. As a result, the Lobo defenders blasted the ball down the field where it was gathered up by Hannah Hand. She crossed the ball into the goal box and Kaela Kelly finished it off to give the Lobos the 1-0 lead.
The Frogs battled to get the tying goal, but the Lobo defense was too tough and the Frogs could only muster four shots in the half and two on goal. Buchanan finished the night with three saves.
With the loss, the Frogs finish the regular season with a 6-10-0 record and a conference mark of 1-6-0. The Frogs next action will be in the MWC Postseason Tournament that is being held in Las Vegas, Nev. The Frogs will likely face the host institution, UNLV, Wednesday night.
