Volleyball sweeps game one of Saturday twinbill

EDINBURG, Texas - With a break in the schedule from Mountain West Conference competition, the TCU volleyball team traveled to UT-Pan American to take on Prairie View A&M in the first of a Saturday doubleheader. Junior Anna Vaughn led the Horned Frogs' offense with 13 kills while hitting .471 as the Frogs defeated the Panthers in three games (30-22, 30-26, 30-14).
The Frogs built a four-point advantage early in game one and managed to maintain the lead throughout most of the game. Vaughn made four of her 10 kills in the match during the first game. Freshman Nirelle Hampton also helped the Frogs' offensive efforts with two service aces.
Prairie View A&M cut into TCU's lead and trailed 20-17 in the late stages of the game. The Frogs went on a 10-5 run to put away the Panthers and move to game two with a 1-0 advantage in the match.
Game two was similar to game one with neither team able to break the game open, but the Frogs were able to maintain a slight advantage of three points. As a unit, the Frogs held the Panthers to -.053 hitting in the game and tallied 16 digs. Sophomore Talaya Whitfield posted a team-high seven digs in the game and junior Calli Corley and Hampton combined for six.
With a 2-0 match advantage at the break, TCU dominated the third game to post its 13th victory of the season. Again, the Frogs held the Panthers to a negative hitting percentage (-.153) and they recorded 5.0 blocks. Smith led the block party with 1.5.
TCU now boasts a record of 13-9 and will play its final match of the day versus UT-Pan American. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
