TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - One of the biggest cross country meets in the nation concluded Saturday afternoon with TCU senior sensation Kip Kangogo pacing the Horned Frogs with a runner-up finish in the men's event. In the women's race, the TCU women landed a spot at No. 25. Both the men and women races were held on the LaVern Gibson Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, hosted by Indiana State University.
Kangogo turned in a second-place showing with a 23:40 clocking in the men's 8,000-meter (blue) race that featured 217 competitors. The Kenyan native came in 8.7 seconds behind men's individual winner Josh Rohatinsky, a former teammate at BYU.
The Frog men also had solid performances from comrades Jackson Langat and Matt Manly. Langat crossed the line with a time of 25:34 to place 151st while Manly, finishing 170th, was close behind by 16 seconds at 25:50.
"I'm really happy with Kip's performance," cross country coach Patrick Cunniff said. "I'm also very satisfied with the men's three front runners."
TCU's J.T. Reinert, Houston Bolin and Cody Cook also competed in the event. Reinert clocked a 26:40 while Bolin posted a time of 27:54 and Cook turned in a 28:12 showing.
In the women's 6,000-meter (white) race, junior Calandra Stewart helped lead the Frogs to a 25th-place finish in the team standings. The Houston, Texas, native recorded a time of 21:41, good for 55th out of 232 runners.
The performances of three sophomores and one freshman gave the Frogs a lift in the race. Cassie Hostick, in just her second meet of the season, was the team's second-best runner on the day as the sophomore came in at 101st with a clocking of 22:10.
Sophomores McKale Davis and Halie Bullin recorded times of 22:43 and 22:51, respectively, while Ashley Young, a rookie from Lewisville, Texas, was good for 23:24.
"The women's performance today gives a good indication of where we are," Cunniff said. "There's still a lot of work to do for the team to be more competitive. However, both the men's and women's teams are still on track to run one of their best races at Regionals."
Alyson Trovato and Katrina Zielinksi were also among the TCU women contingent in the Pre-Nationals Invitational.
The TCU men's and women's cross country teams will return to action in two weeks when they compete at the 2005 Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships in Fort Collins, Colo.
