LAS VEGAS -- The TCU volleyball team fell in three games to UNLV Friday night at Cox Pavilion. Sophomore Talaya Whitfield turned in another impressive dig performance with 20 and freshman Nirelle Hampton tallied 23 assists to move into fifth-place all-time on the career assists list (763).
Both teams started slow but UNLV was able to take advantage of numerous Frog errors and take a 30-21 game one victory. The Rebels Lauren Miramontes led the game with four kills and finished the match with 15. Whitfield flew around the court to keep balls off the ground and picked up six digs.
Games two and three were similar in fashion with the Frogs never able to pull within five points. TCU's Hayley Harmon was a consistent threat on the outside and racked up nine kills in the match.
Hampton, who is the reigning Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, finished the match two kills shy of a double-double, tallying 23 assists and eight kills. Junior Anna Vaughn established a new career-high in digs with 10.
With the loss, TCU fell to 12-8 on the season and 2-4 in conference play. The Frogs head to San Diego for a conference match versus San Diego State on Sunday. Match time is slated for 11 a.m. (PDT).
