DENTON, Texas - The number three proved to be magical for the TCU men's and women's cross country teams in their final tune-up meet of the season. The men clinched their third consecutive title while the women turned in a second-place showing Saturday at the University of North Texas Invitational in Denton, Texas.
TCU's men made a clean sweep of the top three spots and turned in a team season-best 26 points while the women of TCU landed three top 10s to finish second.
"I'm happy with the efforts of both teams and the performances of the team leaders on both sides," cross country coach Patrick Cunniff said. "The men's front three were outstanding. However, we still need to continue getting stronger and we need to get better at the number four and five positions."
Kip Kangogo, Matt Manly and Jackson Langat were the top three finishers, respectively, for the Horned Frogs. Kangogo led all runners in the four-team meet, crossing the finish line in 25:02.09 to make it three in a row for the men's individual title this season.
Manly came in at 26:18.80, almost 17 seconds behind Kangogo, and Langat followed close behind with a time of 26:23.21.
TCU also had outstanding performances from sophomores J.T. Reinart, Houston Bolin and Cody Cook. Reinart rounded out among the top 10 finishers with a 27:25.83 clocking for eighth place.
Bolin, Cook and McKnight placed 12th, 15th and 17th, respectively, while rookie Ben Gogahn posted a time of 30:38.67 for 21st.
In the women's 5K competition, Calandra Stewart paced the Frogs with a second-place finish. The junior came in at 18:25.91, which was 16.46 seconds behind first-place Rachael Forish of SMU. The runner-up finish was Stewart's second in a row after opening the 2005 campaign at 10th in the Baylor Invitational.
TCU sophomores Halie Bullin and Cassie Hostick notched top-10 performances with Bullin taking sixth (19:00.22) and Hostick landing in ninth place (19:17.09) in her first race of 2005.
Ashley Young and Alyson Trovato have been impressive in their rookie campaigns this year with the duo landing in the top 20. Young placed 17th while Trovato rounded out at 20th.
Senior Katrina Zielinski posted a time of 20:28.98 to earn a spot at 25th. Freshman Amanda Foust and Shannon Andrew also competed Saturday.
TCU will return to toe the line at the pivotal Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 15. The top 31 teams and 38 individuals will be determined for nine regional meets.
