WBCA National Player of the Month Award Goes to Irvin

FORT WORTH, TexasSenior Sandora Irvin from the TCU women's basketball team was named the WBCA National Player of the Month for her performance in December, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Monday. It was the second award of the day for Irvin, who snagged Co-Conference USA Player of the Week honors earlier in the day.
Irvin averaged 22.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.6 blocks and 2.8 steals in TCU's eight games during the month. She tallied a career-high 32 points versus Oklahoma Dec. 9 in an 81-65 victory. Irvin scored at least 20 points in six of the eight contests and was in double digits in the rebounds category in all but two games as well. The Lady Frogs went 4-4 during the month.
TCU's star recently broke the C-USA career record for rebounds against Southern Miss Jan. 7, surpassing the 1,167 by Abbie Willenborg from Marquette (1996-00). She currently has 1,189 in her career. Irvin is also staring down the NCAA blocks record, needing just 35 for sole possession of the mark. She has 394 in her career.
Irvin beat out an impressive list of nominees that among others included Monique Currie (Duke), Janel McCarville (Minnesota), Sophia Young (Baylor), Kim Smith (Utah) and Dee Dee Wheeler (Arizona).
Irvin and the Lady Frogs (11-5, 2-0 C-USA) will host USF (12-4, 2-0 C-USA) Friday at 7 p.m. CST in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
