TCU Golfers Share Second Through 36 Holes at NCAA Preview

BALTIMORE, Md. - The 14th-ranked TCU men's golf team is off to a strong start at the prestigious PING/Golfweek NCAA Preview, as the Horned Frogs are tied for second among 15 schools through 36 holes of play. Thirteen of the participating teams are rated among the nation's top 20, and the field includes nine of the country's top 10 schools.
With a seven-over-par score of 567, TCU is just three strokes out of the lead currently held by No. 6 Oklahoma State. The Frogs are tied with No. 5 Georgia Tech and sit six shots ahead of fourth-place and 10th-rated Texas (573). The 54-hole tournament is being contested at the Caves Valley Golf Course (Par 70; 7,124 yards) in Baltimore, Md., the site of the 2005 NCAA Championships.
TCU had some standout performances on day one, topped by junior Drew Pigg's two-under score of 138. Pigg fired back-to-back sub-70 rounds and owns a share of second place among the 75 participants. Pigg, just three strokes out of the individual lead held by OSU's Pablo Martin, is seeking his second straight top-10 finish. The Plano native recorded 10 birdies in his two Sunday rounds.
Also among the top five is senior J.J. Killeen, who scored a pair of even-par rounds. With a sum of 140, Killeen is tied for fourth place. The Lubbock product evened out his five bogeys on the day with five birdies.
Fellow senior David Schultz is tied for 12th with a two-over total of 142. He fired a one-under 69 in the afternoon round and played his final 23 holes at four-under-par.
True freshman Franklin Corpening also had a solid day, as he posted a 74 to open and followed it up with a 73. His 147 (+7) is good for a share of 35th position. Rounding out the TCU roster is junior Colby Beckstrom (T-45th), who has a nine-over total of 149.
TCU earned an automatic berth into the PING/NCAA Preview after finishing the 2003-04 season rated 10th in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings system. In addition to No. 14 TCU, the rest of the field includes: No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 5 Georgia Tech, No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Kentucky, No. 9 UCLA, No. 10 Texas, No. 12 Arizona, No. 13 UNLV, No. 19 California, Pepperdine and host Loyola College.
