The TCU men's tennis program released its 2004-05 schedule Tuesday. Twenty-one regular season matches are set for the spring and the Frogs will compete in six tournaments throughout the year as well. The Purple and White will face at least 15 teams that ended the season ranked among the top 75 and square off with at least 11 that competed in the NCAA Tournament.
"This could be one of the toughest schedules we've had the past few years," head coach Joey Rivé said. "I'm excited about how challenging it is. I'm also happy we have the opportunity to prepare for the season by going to San Juan and playing some very good teams."
The Frogs begin the season in Waco, Texas, at the Baylor Intercollegiate over Sept. 24-26. TCU then takes part in the ITA All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., from Oct. 1-10 before heading to the Midland Invitational Oct. 15-17 in Midland, Texas. TCU finds itself in Austin, Texas, the following week over Oct. 22-25 for the ITA South Central Regional Championships, a tournament the Horned Frogs have usually hosted at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The fall campaign concludes at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., from Nov. 4-7.
TCU's trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, takes place Jan. 13-15 and features some stiff competition in Illinois, Georgia Tech and California. A schedule of play has not been determined. The Fighting Illini were the NCAA champions in 2003 with a perfect record and reached the Final Four last year before falling to UCLA. Georgia Tech ended the season ranked 32nd, while California was No. 30. The squads will play each other in a dual match format, however, the results will only count for individual records.
The Purple and White will use the Rice Indoors in Houston, Texas, over Jan. 21-23 as its final tune-up for the dual match season. Texas AM-Corpus Christi is the Frogs' first opponent Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m. in Fort Worth. TCU then travels to Arlington, Texas, to face Texas-Arlington Feb. 2 at 1:30 p.m. A pair of home matches follow the UTA tilt Feb. 6 and 11 versus Louisiana-Lafayette and BYU at noon and 1:30 p.m.
TCU hosts one of two Conference USA Shootouts from Feb. 25-27 after playing Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, Feb. 13 at 1:30 p.m. An arduous stretch of matches awaits TCU after battling South Alabama at home Feb. 23 at 1:30 p.m., beginning with Virginia March 5 in Cowtown at noon. UVa ended the 2004 season ranked No. 10 and reached the NCAA Round of 16.
A shootout at California over March 11-12 features Pepperdine and the host Golden Bears. TCU faces Cal the first day and Pepperdine the second. The Waves finished last season rated No. 27 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Duke, who ended the year ranked ninth, travels to Fort Worth for a March 16 match at noon. Last year's No. 8-ranked team, Florida, hosts the Horned Frogs March 18 in Gainesville, Fla., at 1 p.m. and Rivé's alma mater Florida State plays TCU March 20 at noon in Tallahasee, Fla. TCU continues its string of four consecutive road matches at 2004 NCAA champion Baylor March 29 at 6 p.m. and then travels to Houston, Texas, to face Rice at 2 p.m.
The Horned Frogs end the regular season with five matches in a row at the Friedman Tennis Center. Tulsa, the 2004 NCAA Championships host, faces TCU April 3 at 1:30 p.m. and Baylor comes to town April 6 at 2 p.m. Metroplex rival SMU squares off with the Frogs April 13 at 2 p.m. and the season ends with back-to-back matches April 16 and 17 versus Oklahoma State and Colorado at 2 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Charlotte is hosting the Conference USA Championship over April 21-24. All 12 teams in the league make the tournament, with the top four teams receiving first-round byes. First and second round NCAA Tournament play begins May 13 and ends May 15 at 16 campus sites to be determined shortly before the tourney draw. Texas A&M hosts the 2005 NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas, over May 21-30. The Aggies hosted the championships for the first time in 2002.
