FORT WORTH, Texas - Past and present clashed in a crowd-pleasing showdown Saturday, Aug. 28. TCU alumni bravely took on the newest generation of Horned Frog volleyball players in a varsity/alumni match. The varsity team showed many signs of brilliance versus the retired veterans, sweeping the older Frogs in three games.
Freshmen Talaya Whitfield and Loren Barry, both of Long Beach, Calif., started and played the entire match, Whitfield at libero and Barry at setter. Both played with poise belying their inexperience and should prove to be exciting additions to the Horned Frog starting rotation. Seniors Dominika Szabo and Ellen Rehme looked at ease and in control on the court and junior Erin Estep proved herself a capable middle blocker. Sophomores Emily Allen and Anna Vaughn each stepped back into their roles on the front line with spring-loaded attacks.
For the alumni, Jill Pape-Kramer (formerly Jill Pape, last played in 1999) provided a lot of the old school firepower for the Frogs, making impressive attacks on the passes from behind. Tori Rubinson (formerly Tori Barlow), last year's starting setter, returned in fine form, looking like she hadn't missed a beat. Allison Lynch also served up a spark for the alumni, showing why she still lurks at the top of several of the Frogs' records.
The 2004 varsity squad hits the road this week, going against powerful opponents in Northwestern, Florida, and Miami (Ohio) in the Gator Invitational Friday and Saturday before bussing it a few hours to Jacksonville, Fla., to take on the Jacksonville Dolphins. The challenging opening weekend begins Friday, Sept. 3 at 9 a.m. against Northwestern. Follow the action through the Live Scoring link on www.gofrogs.com.
