Louisville, Ky. - The TCU Horned Frogs dropped the first game of a doubleheader as the Louisville Cardinals made a three-run third inning stand up. TCU threatened in the seventh, but was unable to push across the tying run as they fell 3-2.
The Cardinals struck first after two scoreless innings as they scored three times in the bottom of the third. After a one-out base knock, center fielder Mark Jurich hit a line drive that just barely cleared the short porch in right field to give Louisville a 2-0 lead. They would tack on one more in the inning before it was over.
The Frogs began to chip away at the lead as Shelby Ford wasted no time getting the Frogs on the board. Ford led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to right field, his 15th long ball of the season.
The Cardinals threatened again in the fourth as they got a lead off double. A sacrifice moved Boomer Whiting to third with one out and a walk to Luis Pardo put runners on the corners with one out. Chad Underwood came on in relief and picked up the final two outs of the inning. Ramon Moses kept the Cardinals scoreless as he snagged a line drive off the bat of Jurich that was ticketed for center field.
TCU inched closer in the fifth as they plated a run on two hits. German Duran led off the inning with a single and Austin Adams followed that up with a base hit to center to mount a threat. After a J.J. Estrada ground out moved the runners up 90 feet, a wild pitch scored Duran from third to pull the Frogs within one, 3-2.
TCU squandered a chance to tie the game in the sixth as they had two runners in scoring position with two outs. Cardinal starter Mike Tisdale had to leave the game after being knocked down on a pop fly. Reliever Brian Halford walked Chris Neuman and Bo Cogbill double, but TCU couldn't come up with the big hit to tie the game.
J.J. Estrada tripled with one out in the seventh, but two great defensive plays by the Cardinal defense preserved the win for Louisville.
TCU is now 27-17 overall and 13-7 in C-USA action.
