The TCU football squad held its annual Purple-White Scrimmage on Saturday morning in front of a couple thousand fans under nearly perfect weather conditions at Amon G. Carter Stadium. Defense was the name of the game as the number one offense defeated the number two offense by a 7-3 score.
The lone touchdown of the game came with just a minute remaining on the clock when walk-on linebacker Zach Zimmerman intercepted a pass from walk-on quarterback Anton Mackey and returned it 47 yards to paydirt. Peter LoCoco added the extra point. The only other scoring in the contest came on a 32-yard field goal by junior placekicker Mike Wynn in the second quarter.
The defense once again looked well ahead of the offense on Saturday, as the offense was able to generate just 201 yards on 79 plays. The defense also caused five turnovers, getting interceptions from Jerome Braziel, Mark Walker, Jarrarcea Williams and Zimmerman, along with a fumble recovery from Elvis Gallegos. The offensive units were held without a first down on 12 of the 18 drives on the day.
"We played real fast," said Braziel of the defense's effort. "We tried to make plays, run to the ball and make things happen. We should be good at the cornerback position with the depth we have," Braziel noted, referring to the addition of junior college corners Drew Coleman and Quincy Butler, along with the return of Thorpe semifinalist Mark Walker. "It's good to know if you come out of the game to catch your breath, there's a guy just as good as you that can come in and make a play."
"I tried to run around a little bit today, but mostly focused on pocket passing," said quarterback Tye Gunn, who completed 12 of 27 passes for 132 yards. "It was awesome to go through spring drills (after sitting out the spring a year ago with a knee injury). It gives me something to build on over the summer. I missed some open receivers today, but I can tell a drastic improvement from the start of spring."
The Frogs now look forward to the start of two-a-day practices in August as they get set to take on the Northwestern Wildcats on Thursday, September 2 at Amon G. Carter Stadium in the 2004 season opener.
