ABOUT THE CONTEST
The No. 18/19 TCU Lady Frogs face the Golden Eagles from Southern Miss Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. TCU (17-4, 6-2 C-USA) is coming off a 76-44 victory against Tulane Friday night on ESPN Regional Television. Southern Miss (14-7, 2-6 C-USA) was dropped by a score of 70-56 by Houston the same day. USM won 10 games in a row to start the 2003-04 campaign and finished with a 12-1 record in non-conference games. The Lady Frogs and Golden Eagles have a limited history with one another, as their series includes only two games. The Purple and White won both match-ups, the first of which was by a 72-37 count in 2002 in Fort Worth. Last season, TCU escaped with a 69-63 victory in Hattiesburg, Miss. Freshman forward Deodra Carter is the Golden Eagles' leading scorer this season with an average of 12.9 points per game. She is third on the team in rebounding with 5.2 each contest. Fellow rookie Michelle Poindexter, a forward/center, is Southern Miss' other double digit scorer with 10.7 per game. Poindexter tops the Golden Eagles in boards and blocked shots as well with averages of 7.6 and 1.3. Senior guard Lana Lewis adds nine points to USM's offense and sophomore Denise Wilson contributes the just under nine. Lewis is also USM's most dangerous outside threat, knocking down over 40 percent from three-point land on the year.
TCU'S LAST TIME OUT
Sandora Irvin notched her fourth consecutive double-double Friday night to lead the No. 18 TCU Lady Frogs past Tulane, 76-44, at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth. Teammate Ebony Shaw tied the school record for games played, appearing in her 119th contest with the Purple and White. Jill Sutton, a senior in 2000-01, finished her career playing 119 games. Irvin ended the game with 17 rebounds and 13 points. She also recorded five rejections and three steals in 27 minutes of play. Shaw tossed in 13 as well on 6-of-11 shooting and had three swipes. Kim Ortega and Tiffany Evans each had eight points and Tracy Wynn and Ashley Davis recorded seven. Delacey Joseph was the lone member of the Green Wave's squad in double figures with 14. TCU shot 48.4 percent from the field (30-62) and out-rebounded the Green Wave 50-35. The Lady Frogs wrapped up the game with 11 blocks compared to only two for Tulane. TCU held TU to 26.7 percent shooting (16-60). TCU dominated the paint with 40 points to Tulane's 16. The Lady Frogs also had a huge advantage on fast break points, 23-2. Despite each squad committing 23 turnovers, TCU was able to turn them into 27 points, while Tulane only coverted 13 points off TOs.
LAST TIME THEY MET
TCU and Southern Miss last met Feb. 21, 2003, in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Lady Frogs won by a six-point margin, 69-63, to cap off a three-game winning streak following their loss to Tennessee in Knoxville. The scoring in the first half came in spurts, as USM snagged an early 11-3 advantage before Irvin tallied six straight points to ignite a TCU rally. Southern Miss extended its lead to 10 points, 28-18, but the Lady Frogs were able to slice it in half heading to the break, 33-28. TCU took control in the second stanza, outscoring the Golden Eagles by 11 to get back over the .500 plateau for the first time since early January when it held a 7-6 mark after defeating Miami (Ohio). Amy Pack and Ebony Shaw came up big for TCU by scoring a combined 36 points on 15-of-25 shooting. Shaw also had seven rebounds to lead the Lady Frogs. Sandora Irvin had a solid outing off the bench, netting 13 points, grabbing six rebounds and rejecting five shots. Allison Story led the way for the Golden Eagles with 16 on 6-of-10 shooting. La'Tasha Sumerall added 11 and Marlena Lee scored 10 points.
