The annual TCU Night of Champions, set for tonight (February 26), has been moved from the Walsh Complex to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on the TCU campus. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 6:30 p.m. and is a precursor to the start of spring practice.
"The Night of Champions is a culmination of our off-season conditioning program," said TCU Strength and Conditioning Coach Don Sommer. "It's a showcase event where the some of our strongest athletes compete in the bench press, incline, squat and power clean lifts. We expect some records to fall on Thursday."
The players compete for the coveted Iron Frog Award, which is based on a Power Index (PI). The PI is determined by adding the combined weight lifted in the bench press, squat and power clean, divided by the player's weight. The award is given in four categories: down players (under 260 pounds), down players (over 260 pounds), standup players (fullbacks, tight ends and linebackers) and skill players (quarterbacks, tailbacks, receivers, defensive backs and kickers).
Here are the scheduled participants in Thursday's Night of Champions:
BENCH PRESS: Zach Bray, Chris Hayes, Marvin Godbolt and Shane Sims.
INCLINE: Zarnell Fitch, Rannoris Ray, Andrew Ward and Ken Lewis.
SQUAT: Jared Kesler, Robert Merrill, Jared Retkofsky and Cory Rodgers.
POWER CLEAN: Anthony Alabi, Cody McCarty, Logo Tevaseu and Mark Walker.
The Horned Frogs will officially begin spring practice drills on Wednesday, March 3. That will mark the first of 15 spring practices, culminating in the annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 3.
"These spring practices are really the first 15 of 44 practices we have to get ready for the season opener," said TCU head coach Gary Patterson. "That's how we approach it. There is a lot of growing up for us to do as a football team. Our goal going into the spring is to start to find out who our top 44 and then our top 65 players are. It needs to be a physical spring," noted Patterson, "but in the same right, we need to keep people healthy."
