FORT WORTH, Texas
Conference USA announced today that TCU's Rafael Abreu has been chosen Co-Men's Tennis Player of the week, sharing the honor with Uli Kiendl from USF. It marks the second week in a row that the Horned Frogs have earned the recognition, as Alex Menichini received the award a week ago.
Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini, currently ranked 19th in doubles, upset the nation's No. 1 doubles team of Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic, 8-4, in No. 13 TCU's 4-3 win over No. 9 Texas A&M. It was TCU's first victory against a top-10 team since defeating the Aggies in the quarterfinals of the 2001 NCAA Championships. Against No. 36 Florida State, Abreu and Sestini registered another upset in doubles, beating No. 15 Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof, 9-7, to clinch the doubles point for TCU. After FSU tied the match at 3-3, Abreu won the match for the Frogs by defeating Chip Webb in three sets at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
TCU is now 5-0 on the year and hosts No. 48 South Alabama Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 1:30 p.m. on the Tut Bartzen Varsity Tennis Courts at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
