FORT WORTH, TexasSenior Sandora Irvin from the TCU women's basketball team added to her long list of accolades Monday. Irvin was named one of 30 candidates for the fourth annual Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award and Conference USA Player of the Week. Irvin is already on the preseason lists as a potential winner of the Wade Trophy, Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy.
The Bayer CLASS Award is presented annually to the nation's senior player of the year for NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball. From that list, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the award next February. When the season reaches the NCAA Championship in March, nationwide fan balloting will be coupled with results from voting by coaches and media to determine the male and female winners. Legendary sportscaster Dick Enberg, who initiated the idea for the award and now serves as honorary chairman, will announce the winner during the CBS telecast of the NCAA Men's Final Four.
The Senior Class Award--an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School--was launched in the 2001-02 college basketball season. It is designed to honor the attributes of seniors who remain committed to their university and elect to pursue the many rewards that a senior season can bring.
Irvin was selected C-USA Player of the Week following TCU's incredible run to the Rainbow Wahine Classic tournament title in Honolulu. The Lady Frogs stunned then-No. 3-ranked Georgia Saturday, 64-63, and then ousted then-No. 13/14 Michigan State in the championship, 80-75. Irvin was named the Wahine Classic MVP for averaging 26 points, 13.3 rebounds and 3.8 blocks over the three-day tournament.
Irvin had perhaps the greatest game of her career against Georgia when she tallied 28 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks against the Lady Dogs. In the championship game versus MSU, Irvin scored 23, collected 17 rebounds and dished out six assists. She had 27 points and eight rebounds in the Lady Frogs' tourney opener with California.
