FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU continues its Conference USA rise as the team bested Cincinnati in a surprise upset Saturday night. The tough loss to Louisville the night before did not stop the Horned Frogs from taking the Bearcats - last year's co-Conference USA Champions - in four games for the first-ever victory over UC.
This week the Frogs travel to the Midwest for matches against DePaul and Marquette. Presently, DePaul ranks third to last in Conference USA with a 1-4 league mark and a 8-13 overall record. The Blue Demons recently split their weekend, winning against UAB and dropping the second match to USF. Against UAB, Mandy Moorberg led with a double-double 14 kills and 10 digs with a .385 attack average. Janet Goreham also tallied 14 kills and Ellen Hayes had a match-high 17 digs. The Blue Demons marked almost twice as many kills as the Blazers and held UAB to a .057 attack average.
Against USF, the Blue Demons were not so lucky. The Bulls swept DePaul 30-27, 30-23, 30-23 on Saturday. Although neither team had an explosive offensive night, DePaul came up on the shorter end with a .102 average and were outblocked 4.5 to 9. Goreham was the only Blue Demon with double-digit kills, collecting 15 and picking up 12 digs while Amy Holmes picked up a match-leading 20 digs.
Overall, Moorberg leads with 3.62 kpg and 268 total with a team-leading 802 total attacks and 37 aces. Amie West leads with 769 assists (11.14 apg) while Hayes leads with 299 digs. Goreham averages 1.14 bpg and totals 87.
Meanwhile, Marquette has been playing a similar season to TCU. With a 13-5 overall record and 3-2 C-USA mark, the team is tied with Tulane for fifth. Theresa Coughlin leads the team with 4.07 kpg, 240 kills, and 591 total attacks. Sarah Vernon owns a 12.00 apg mark with 708 assists total and is also the top server with 19 aces. Meanwhile, Erin Freer picks up 3.95 dpg and 233 total while Erica Heisser has blocked 66 ball for 1.12 per game.
The Golden Eagles won both matches this weekend and freshman Kimberly Todd shined with a match-leading 24 kills and .514 hitting avg. versus USF. The team held UAB to a .043 attack percentage while the Golden Eagles tallied a .358 themselves.
