FORT WORTH, Texas - After an impressive showing at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges, the TCU Horned Frog men's golf team is now rated first in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin computer rankings system. The Horned Frogs also have impressed the NCAA coaches, leaping from 14th to seventh in the latest Precept Coaches Poll.
At the Ridges, the Horned Frogs, ranked 12th in the Golfweek preseason poll, were competing against 14 other schools who were rated among the nation's top 30. TCU finished five strokes behind tournament champion Florida, currently the second-rated team in the country, and with a three-round score of 859, the Frogs easily outdistanced No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 Southern California by 12 strokes for second place.
At the moment, four Frogs are rated among the nation's top 75 in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual rankings system. Sophomore Colby Beckstrom, the 2003 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, is seventh; junior David Schultz, a 2003 honorable mention All-American, is 26th; senior Adam Meyer, a 2002 honorable mention All-American, is 49th; and junior J.J. Killeen, who advanced to the round of 16 at the 2003 U.S. Amateur, is 68th.
Those four players, along with redshirt freshman and former Colorado High School Player of the Year Drew Stoltz, are scheduled to compete for the Frogs this weekend at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga. Beckstrom (5th), Schultz (T-9th), Meyer (T-15th) and Killeen (T-18th) all finished among the top 20 individuals at the Ridges, while Stoltz tied for 47th place in his first collegiate event.
"We know it's very early on in the season, but any time you are ranked No. 1, it feels great," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "We played very well at the Ridges, and we'll look to continue that strong play as we move along through the season."
The 18-team Carpet Capital Collegiate is set for Oct. 3-5 at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga. The impressive field includes the following teams (with Golfweek and Precept Poll rankings in parentheses): TCU (1/7), Florida (2/1), Clemson (5/2), Southern California (6/11), Georgia (7/8), Georgia Tech (9/13), Augusta State (10/12), Oklahoma (12/19), Wake Forest (13/9), South Carolina (23/23), Vanderbilt (24/NR), UNLV (25/9), Texas (NR/6), North Carolina State (NR/18), Auburn (NR/20), Duke (NR/22), Tennessee and East Tennessee State,
