Fort Worth, Texas - Head coach Jim Schlossnagle announced that Eugene Espineli has joined TCU baseball after transferring from the University of Texas. Espineli, a 6-4, 178 pound left-handed pitcher, was used primarily as a reliever and spot starter for the Longhorns.
In three seasons at Texas, Espineli compiled an 8-2 record with a 3.43 ERA in 115+ innings of work. Espineli was named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Fall and Spring Honor Roll all three years at Texas. As a sophomore, Espineli played a key roll in the Longhorns National Championship season, including a 5-0 record with a 2.08 ERA in 52.0 innings of work, which earned him Big 12 Honorable Mention. In 17 appearances, he struck out 39 and walked only 17. For the past two summers, Espineli has been a member of the Cotuit Kettlers in the Cape Cod League. He led the pitching staff with an 0.89 ERA in 2002 and was second with a 1.48 ERA in 2003.
"Eugene is an outstanding, experienced left-handed pitcher who will make an immediate impact in our program," said Coach Schlossnagle. "He has had great success on a national scale and and is a tremendous student as well."
Espineli, a Katy, Texas native, attended James E. Taylor High School where he was a member of the school's baseball program for two seasons. As a senior, he was named a Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association and Greater Houston All-Star pitcher after putting together a 10-2 season with a 1.90 ERA and striking out 110 batters.
Espineli will be a senior at TCU this year.
