The TCU men's and women's cross country teams get their fall seasons underway Saturday, when they travel to Denton to take part in the 26th annual North Texas Invitational. The meet will be held at UNT's Research Park Facility, with the men getting started at 8:00 a.m. for an 8K run, followed by the women at 8:40 a.m. for a 5K event.
"We have some key people who will not be running in the first meet of the season, but it's still a good opportunity for our young runners to make an early claim for a position on the team," said TCU coach Derek Koonts. "This meet's competition has significantly improved from last year's meet. It's a great opportunity for our kids to show what they're capable of doing. This is just the first meet of the season," continued Koonts. "It allows us to begin building for the key meets later in the year, as we set our sights on the conference and regional meets."
Other teams expected to be in the field for the UNT Opener include Baylor, SMU, UT-Arlington and the host school, North Texas.
The Frogs will be represented by seven women and eight men in the opener. Competing for the women are Katie Cosgrove, McKale Davis, Heather Isbell, Mary Kinyanjui, Pattie Parker, Calandra Stewart and Katrina Zielinski. The men will feature Chris Benassi, David Harris, Wes Johnson, Brad Maciulewicz, Alex Morris, J.T. Reinert, Josh Sharon and Raita Yamanouchi. The Frogs' top two runners from last season, Alayne Thompson, who was the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, and Jackson Langat, a second-team all-conference performer, will not compete on Saturday.
