The TCU football squad went through a 70-play "situational" scrimmage under sunny skies and warm morning temperatures at Amon G. Carter Stadium on Tuesday.
"The offense did better today," said TCU head coach Gary Patterson following the workout. "I challenged them to do so. We worked on different situations - coming off the goal line, in the red zone and in an overtime period. I liked the play of our first two quarterbacks (Tye Gunn and Brandon Hassell) and the wide receivers did a good job. Our offensive line knocked some people off the ball. If our young running backs want to get on the field, they're going to have to hang onto the football," noted Patterson.
Redshirt freshman Robert Merrill was the game's leading rusher with a dozen carries for 42 yards. Gunn completed 4-of-6 passes for 43 yards and a touchdown, while Hassell went 5-for-10 for 67 yards. Senior wide receiver Bruce Galbert hauled in four passes for 43 yards, including a 10-yard scoring strike from Gunn.
"The defense has to step up," continued Patterson. "This was the second time we stepped on the game field for a scrimmage and have been lethargic. It seems like we're waiting for somebody like LaMarcus McDonald to make a play. That hallway's empty. Somebody else is going to have to step up."
The Frogs will be back on the practice field twice on Wednesday, with sessions slated for 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The annual "Meet the Frogs" mock game, clinic and autograph session is set for Saturday, beginning at noon at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
The Frogs are slated to open the season on Monday, September 1, when they travel to New Orleans to face the Tulane Green Wave. Game time is set for 7 p.m. CT and the contest will be televised by ESPN.
