Beckstrom Invited to Canadian Tour Event

BRIMLEY, Mich. - TCU sophomore golfer Colby Beckstrom will participate in the Bay Mills Open Players' Championship, a Canadian Tour event, beginning on Thursday at the Wild Bluff Golf Course in Brimley, Mich. Beckstrom, the 2003 Michigan Amateur champion, will be paired with 13-year-old sensation Michelle Wie, another of the field's six amateur invitees, for the first two rounds.
"I can't wait to play in the tournament," Beckstrom said. "I have been playing well this summer and feel confident heading into the weekend. And I am really excited to get to play with Michelle. She could become the best female golfer in history, and to have a chance to play with her when she is just 13 is really special. I'll have that memory for the rest of my life."
The event, which will be televised live on The Golf Channel Thursday through Sunday, will reach over 50 million homes and businesses in the United States and Canada. The event will also re-run each evening of the event and again the following week. Additional exposure for the event will appear in The Golf Channel's January and February Viewer's Guide distributed in Golf Digest and Golf World, which have a subscriber base of over 1.7 million.
Beckstrom, a native of North Muskegon, Mich., was named Conference USA's Freshman of the Year in 2002-03. Beckstrom enjoyed one of the finest freshman seasons in TCU history, owning a 73.47 scoring average while recording two top-10 and two top-20 finishes. His best finish of the year was a tie for second place at the Sooner Invitational, just his second collegiate tournament.
This spring, Beckstrom helped carry the Frogs to the 2003 Conference USA championship and a final national ranking of No. 11 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings system. He had five sub-70 rounds on the season, which included a career-best round of 66. The 20-year-old was TCU's top finisher in two events, and played in 12 of the team's 13 tournaments. Last October, he was recognized as C-USA's October Golfer of the Month after a pair of top-10 finishes.
