TCU senior placekicker Nick Browne has been selected as Playboy magazine's 2003 Anson Mount Scholar/Athlete Award recipient, given to the top student-athlete in Division I-A football.
The Anson Mount Scholar/Athlete Award recognizes achievement in the classroom as well as excellence on the playing field. Nominated by their colleges, the candidates are judged by the editors of Playboy on their scholastic and athletics accomplishments. Browne will attend Playboy's preseason All-America weekend, which will be held in Phoenix, May 9-11. He will be given a commemorative medallion and will be included in the All-America team photograph. In addition, Playboy will contribute $5,000 to the general scholarship fund at TCU.
In the classroom, Browne carries a 3.97 GPA and will complete his finance degree in May. He plans to earn either an MBA or law degree following graduation. On the field, Browne was a semifinalist for the 2002 Lou Groza Award, given to the nation's top placekicker, after earning first-team Verizon Academic all-America and first-team all-Conference USA honors. He was the first TCU player to earn first team Academic all-America honors since 1980. He earned fourth-team all-America honors from The Sporting News and was one of eight semifinalist for the Socrates Award, which goes to the college athlete who best exemplifies excellence in athletics and academics.
During his two-year playing career, Browne has connected on 37-of-50 field goal attempts and has been named Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week four times.
In 2002, Browne connected on 23-of-30 field goal attempts, an NCAA-best 1.92 field goals made per game. He led the team, was second in the conference and 18th in the country in scoring, averaging 8.75 points per game. He was successful on 9-for-9 field goal attempts from inside the 30 and 18-for-20 inside the 40-yard line. He scored 105 points, the most by a kicker in TCU history and the fourth most points for any TCU player regardless of position
In 2001, Browne recorded a "double-double," leading both the Frog football and soccer teams in points. On the gridiron, he was TCU's top scorer with 72 points and was a two-time Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week. He also was the leading scorer on the TCU soccer team with five goals and three assists for 13 points and was named the 2001-02 winner of the Pop Boone Award, given to the TCU Male Athlete of the Year.
Browne was a two-sport standout at Naaman Forest High School in Garland where he earned all-district honors on the gridirion as a kicker and named to the all-state academic team. He excelled on the soccer field as well, as he was twice named to the all-area team and earned first team all-district honors in each of his final three seasons. He was named the district offensive MVP as a senior and played on the state championship team.
