FORT WORTH, Texas - On the strength of a three-game sweep at Conference USA-rival UAB, TCU has been named college baseball's Team of the Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com. The Horned Frogs outscored the Blazers 18-2 in the three games at UAB's Jerry D. Young Memorial Field en route to the plaudits.
TCU won the three games by scores of 1-0, 7-0 and 10-2 to register the sweep over UAB. The Blazers came into the weekend just a half-game behind the Frogs in the C-USA standings with a 21-10 overall record and 6-5 league mark.
Friday's starting pitcher Clayton Jerome (Mesquite, Texas/Poteet) got the weekend started by extending his scoreless innings streak to 16 with eight stanzas of shutout ball in TCU's thrilling 1-0 win. Left fielder Chris Meeks (Brownwood, Texas/Brownwood) secured the heart-stopping triumph by throwing out the would-be tying run at the plate to end the contest.
The Horned Frogs recorded their second-straight shutout and fourth whitewashing in their last four victories by blanking the Blazers 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. Left-hander Kyle Shoemaker (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) held the Blazers in check by throwing seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five.
TCU completed the sweep with a 10-2 rout on Sunday afternoon. Third baseman Mike Settle (Fort Worth, Texas/Country Day) led the onslaught with a career-high six RBI. The Horned Frog pitching staff extended its scoreless innings streak to 26 before allowing UAB's first runs of the weekend in the eighth and ninth frames.
TCU (23-15, 10-5 C-USA) faces another critical league series when it welcomes East Carolina (23-12-1, 10-5 C-USA) for three games this weekend at Lupton Stadium and Williams-Reilly Field. The Frogs and Pirates are tied for second place in the C-USA standings, just a game behind league-leading Southern Miss. The opener of the three-game weekend set is slated for 6:30 p.m. Friday.
