TCU senior defensive end Bo Schobel has been named as one of six finalists for the 2003 Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award, as announced by the Ted Hendricks Foundation today.
Schobel, a 6-5, 268-pound senior from Columbus, Texas, is the Conference USA leader in sacks with 10.5 and is tied for the top spot in the conference with 16 tackles for loss. He has established a new school record for sacks in a season, breaking the old mark of 10.0, set by his cousin, Aaron Schobel, in 1999. Earlier this season he was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for his 3.0-sack performance at USF, as the Frogs broke the Bulls' 21-game home winning streak. He was also named to the Mid-Season All-America Team, as selected by Richard Cirminiello of CollegeFootballNews.com and is a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award, given to the nation's top lineman.
Other Hendricks Award finalists include UCLA's David Ball, Oklahoma's Dan Cody, the University of Georgia's David Pollack, Ohio State University's Will Smith, and Southern California's Kenechi Udeze.
The Hendricks Award winner will be announced during the final week of the bowl season.
Commenting on the finalists, Pro Football Hall of Famer, Ted Hendricks said, "This year's vote for the finalists was very close with six outstanding defensive ends rising to the top. They all have had fine years and I can't wait to watch them through the end of their season."
On-field performance, leadership abilities and contributions to school and community are some of the criteria that will be used to determine the award winner. The candidates may represent any class (freshman through senior) as well as any recognized four-year NCAA member school (Division I through Division III).
Arizona State University defensive end Terrell Suggs, a first round pick in the 2003 National Football League draft, won the first Hendricks Award in 2002.
Schobel and the Frogs return to action on Saturday, November 15, when they host the Cincinnati Bearcats in a 2:00 p.m. contest at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. The Frogs enter the contest with a perfect 9-0 record on the season, 6-0 in Conference USA play. They and Oklahoma remain the only two undefeated teams in Division I football.
