Volleyball Drops Four-Game Match to Coastal Carolina

CLEMSON, S.C. - The TCU Volleyball team dropped its opening match of the Clemson Invitational against Coastal Carolina, 3-1. The Frogs fall to an even 6-6, while the Lady Chanticleers move to 6-4.
The Frogs rushed out to a quick lead in game one, leading by as many as seven points midway through. But the Lady Chanticleers cut into the lead late, shaving it to one three times, including 27-26. However, behind three consecutive kills from sophomore Dominika Szabo, the Frogs took the game one victory, 30-26. Freshman Erin Estep had six kills on eight attacks for a .750 hitting percentage in the first game.
Game two was a reversal of fortune as Coastal Carolina leapt to the lead, outpacing TCU by as many as seven. The Frogs were able to pull within four behind freshman Jackie Choi's first collegiate kill, but still ended up on the short-end of a 30-24 score. Estep continued her errorless performance getting four kills on seven attacks in the second stanza.
Coastal Carolina jumped out on the Frogs again in game three, but this time the Frogs rallied. TCU tied the match at 28 all on a kill from freshman Carissa Mills, then took the lead with Szabo's ace. Game three, in the end however, was the Chanticleer's as they fought back to win 32-30. Mills hit .800 in the third (8 kills, 0 errors, 10 attacks).
The fourth game was nip and tuck throughout as the teams traded points. But again, the Chanticleers came out on top as they outdistanced the Frogs, 30-25, to win the match.
Estep led the team in kills and attacks with 20 and 40, respectively. While senior Jenn Cuca posted 27 digs to become the No. 2 individual on the list for digs in a match. Junior Tori Barlow tallied 49 assists for the afternoon. Four Frogs each had one ace, while senior Stephanie Watson was credited with six blocks.
The Frogs will look to rebound tomorrow when they take on Virginia Tech at 11:00 a.m. CT and host Clemson at 6:00 p.m. CT. The team's next homestand will be Oct. 4 and 5 when Conference USA opponents Southern Miss and Tulane visit Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
