FRISCO, Texas - Less than 24 hours after completing play at The Ridges Intercollegiate in Tennessee, the TCU men's golf team was at it again, this time competing in the Sooner Invitational in Frisco, Texas. But the Horned Frogs looked anything but fatigued. Instead, TCU scorched the Fazio Course of the Stonebriar Resort to the tune of a 25-under-par 551.
Following the first two rounds of the tournament, the Frogs lead second-place Oklahoma by seven strokes and third-place New Mexico by nine. The remaining seven teams are at least 15 shots behind 28th-rated TCU.
Individually, true freshman Colby Beckstrom (132) is the clubhouse leader after two rounds of play. He fired back-to-back phenomenal rounds of 66. With the 12-under total, Beckstrom leads senior teammate Adam Rubinson by three strokes. Rubinson, who opened with a two-under 70, posted a tourney-best score of 65 on the second 18 holes to move into second place individually. Both men are looking for their first-ever collegiate championships.
Also in the hunt for the individual title is sophomore David Schultz, who shared individual medalist honors at The Ridges over the weekend. Schultz sits in a tie for eighth place with a five-under 139. He notched his first sub-70 round of the season in the opening 18 holes, scoring a 69.
Sophomore J.J. Killeen carded a one-over 145 over the two rounds to share 26th place, while junior Stephen Polanski had a 150 (+6). He currently resides in a tie for 43rd. Playing as an individual, freshman Drew Pigg scored a two-under-par 70 in the second round and has a 146 overall, which has him tied for 29th position.
"Our guys really played outstanding golf today," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "Since we didn't have the chance to play the practice round yesterday, I didn't expect anything like this. The guys just battled hard and made it happen. We put ourselves in a good position, but we'll be tested tomorrow and will have to play our best to win the tournament."
The Horned Frogs are scheduled to tee off in the third and final round beginning at 9:10 a.m on Tuesday. TCU will be paired with Oklahoma. For directions to the course, call (972) 625-5050.
