The TCU Horned Frog football team went through a pair of practices on Tuesday as they continued to prepare for their nationally-televised season-opener at Cincinnati on Labor Day, Monday, September 2.
The Frogs held a kicking scrimmage during the morning workout. The afternoon session also included some special teams work, along with assignment work for the offense and defense.
"The kicking scrimmage was better than a year ago," said TCU head coach Gary Patterson. "The scrimmage allows us to find out what we have, which players want to play on special teams and move the depth chart around. I thought the number one punt team (which features senior punter Joey Biasatti) did well."
The highlight of the morning came when LaTarence Dunbar went coast-to-coast on a kickoff return. Dunbar was the nation's leading kickoff returner two seasons ago.
"It was good to see our kickoff return team have success," noted Patterson. "It's a point of emphasis to be better at this season."
With a number of injuries during the two-a-days, the Frogs have seen several young players get significant reps. After Monday's practice, Coach Patterson singled out Chad Andrus, Cory Rodgers and Maurice Bouldwin as true freshmen who could see playing time this fall.
"With the injury to Stanley Moss, we need to get Chad Andrus ready at tight end. Cory Rodgers has made too many plays to keep him on the side. Bouldwin has moved from tight end to the defensive line where we're a little thin," added Patterson.
"It's been good to get the young players that many reps," said defensive coordinator David Bailiff. "It (the injuries) forces us to take a look at them. I'm excited about Maurice Bouldwin. Once he gets some confidence, he has the opportunity to help us."
"Everybody's a little banged up this time of the year," said Patterson. "The teams that can push through when they are banged up are the teams that win."
The fall practice schedule continues on Wednesday when the Frogs conduct a 10 a.m. scrimmage at Amon G. Carter Stadium. The annual "Meet the Frogs" scrimmage is set for Saturday, August 24, beginning at noon.
