FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU right fielder Terry Trofholz (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior/Creighton) became the first Horned Frog baseball player of the millennium to garner all-America honors when he was named a second-team all-American by Baseball Weekly magazine and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) this week.
Trofholz enjoyed one of the most prolific seasons in TCU and Conference USA history in 2002 to propel him to the honor. He compiled an astounding .441 batting average to rank eighth nationally and shatter the C-USA single-season record of .427 set by Houston's Geofrey Tomlinson in 1997.
The junior also tied the TCU single-season record for hits with 94. He shares the mark with the Frogs' last all-American, Royce Huffman, who set the record en route to all-America recognition in 1999. Trofholz's .441 average was also the second-highest in school history and moved him into fourth place all-time in career batting average at TCU (.381).
Besides leading the team and conference is batting average, Trofholz also led the squad and ranked among the league's top ten in hits, runs (51), total bases (121), on-base percentage (.481), sacrifice bunts (12), stolen bases (22) and triples (4). Also a force in the field, the right fielder led TCU with eight outfield assists and a .992 fielding percentage.
Trofholz is one of seven players from Conference USA to be named on one of the NCBWA's three all-America teams. He is joined by Houston's Brad Sullivan and Jesse Crain as the only players from C-USA to be recognized by both Baseball Weekly and the NCBWA.
